DESPITE a spot of car trouble this week, Ben Amor was safe in the knowledge that he had already motored to a fine tournament victory and clinched another piece of family history.

After qualifying 12th through the War Memorial Trophy at Burnham and Berrow, in Somerset, on Thursday September 10, the 19-year-old, from Marlborough, went on to win the weekend’s West of England Open Amateur Championship.

Amor finished top of the pile in the match play competition with a score of 7&5 and his triumph saw him follow in his father Simon’s footsteps, and not for the first time.

Last year, the teenager mimicked his father – Marlborough’s club professional – by winning the County Championship and victory at Burnham and Berrow also earned the Amor’s an unprecedented record.

“My dad won this title in 1991 and a few years ago, we won the West of England foursomes, so that makes us the first father and son to hold both titles – nobody else has done it before,” said Amor.

“You had to finish in the top 32 of the qualifier, which was the War Memorial Trophy, to get through to the match play.

“My dad actually won the qualifier and the tournament whereas I didn’t start the week off playing that well but it came together for me.

“I was due to head straight up to Woodhall Spa for England team assessments on Monday but my car broke down as soon as I got back on the weekend so I had to wait until Tuesday to go.

“Usually, a selection panel just picks the team so these assessments are a bit different for me.

“I’ve been in the England A team but hopefully winning this title is a start towards pushing towards the Elite team – it’s been alright getting top-15 finishes this season but this stands out a lot more.”
