ELEANOR Webster claimed a superb silver medal in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at the weekend.
Inspired by competing at the Olympic Park, the 11-year-old from Alderton, finished as runner-up in the under 12 girls’ event.
Webster missed gold by just three points after a fantastic run in which she posted the fastest time.
Unfortunately, she trailed eventual winner Larissa Giles by 120 points on the swim, in which she was only 51st, and that gap proved too much to bridge.
Nonetheless, Webster’s silver continues her fine start to the year, which also included a silver in the minor girls’ race at the South West Cross Country Championships.
Gemma Shepherd took a break from purely running events, in which she has excelled this winter, to finish ninth in the under 19s event.
The Sheldon School student was quickest on the run – by 14 seconds – but her 20th-place in the swim left her with too much ground to make up on her rivals as she scored 2,157 points, almost 200 off gold.
Fellow Sheldon athlete Kirsty Stanley was 15th on 1,981 points.
In the under 16s event, Caitlin Wosika, of John of Gaunt, was eighth and school-mate Madeleine Aldam-Gates was sixth in the under 13s.
In the under 19 men’s competition, Sheldon’s George Claverley was eighth and James Gordon, of St Augustine’s, was 20th amongst the under 13s.
