CALNE teenager Graccia Gardner will find out on Sunday if she’s in line for international honours after impressing at last weekend’s National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships.

The 13-year-old, who swims for the Bristol Central club, was competing in her fourth successive national championships and clinched her fourth team gold medal in a row after helping her 13-14 age group squad pip Reading Royals to the top of the points table at the GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester.

Gardner was fourth overall alongside partner Niamh Allanson-Campbell in the duet free routine competition and also finished ninth individually, earning her a berth at this weekend’s England Talent Trials at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

The youngster, who also swims with the Calne Alpha Four club and practises at St Mary’s School, trains for more than 20 hours a week and says that she’s looking forward to attempting to break into the international fold.

“You had to come in the top 20 to get an England trial – I got close last year but I did it this time and it was a really happy feeling,” said Gardner, who is a pupil at Sheldon School in Chippenham.

“The trial is to get in the junior England team and I am nervous but I’m a lot more excited.

“My mum and dad (Jo and Simon) will be coming with me and there are five other people from Bristol – I also know a few other swimmers from other clubs that will be going.

“It’s going to be really tough. We’re going to be doing a lot of flexibility work and speed swimming. Hopefully I’ve got a chance of getting in the squad.”

She added: “I’ve won a medal with the team every time (at the nationals).

“It was the first time that I’ve taken the duet to nationals so that was a lot of fun but there was also a lot of pressure because of the England trial – we did well but we just slightly missed out on third.

“I’m really pleased because a lot of hard work has gone into this.”
