It's our pitch, not a vegetable patch

Angry Malmesbury Victoria chairman Paul Neale has accused Scottish and Southern Electric of treating their ground like a vegetable patch.

Parts of the Flying Monk pitch were dug up last week as the electricity company worked on cables serving Malmesbury Primary School.

Despite being filled in, the damage forced the postponement of Vics' Hellenic League Division One South and West clash with Purton on Saturday.

It means the club will be given a £1,000 fine for being unable to fulfil the fixture, which they will hand over to Scottish and Southern.

"I am just so disappointed. They just drove over the pitch," said Mr Neale, who has been chairman for four years. "They had no business being on the ground. It is a football pitch, not somebody's vegetable patch."

What made Mr Neale, 54, from Gastons Road, Malmesbury, even more upset was there was an agreement that work would not be done on the pitch.

It was due to be carried out by the school next door.

But on Easter Monday Mr Neale arrived to find Scottish and Southern had gained entry.

The holes have been filled in and covered with sand but will not be turfed over until the season is finished.

A spokesperson from Scottish and Southern said they will tend to the pitch once the season is over.

"There was never an agreement to wait until the end of the season but there was one not to work on their pitch," he said.
