Gingell: We've got to fight for third

Angry Corsham Town boss Mel Gingell says his side are facing a fight for third place as he gives up on the title after 2-1 defeat at home to Ilfracombe.

The men from the Southbank threw away a 1-0 half time lead during two mad second half minutes when first Barry Yeo equalised and then James Davey stole the points.

It means Gingell's men are on a four game winless run and the former Wiltshire U18 boss says they must show their character if they are to just finish third.

Corsham still sit second but third place Dawlish, who they travel to on Monday, are a point behind with three games in hand.

Gingell said: "We can forget first or second now and it will be diffcult for us to hang on to third. The players have to show they want it because we are up against it."

And, despite still being in the Wiltshire Senior Cup semi final - with a game against Melksham Town next month, Gingell says league positions mean more to him.

He said: "I would rather come third than win the Cup, the priority was the league and it always has been, I'm not really interested.

"But the players want to win it and there is no doubt they will be up for it."

Gingell was raging after he watched Corsham throw three points away against Ilfracombe. He had made five changes from the side who drew 0-0 at Bitton on Friday and they started brightly with Jack Nicholas' free kick hitting the bar.

Ross Lye opened the scoring on 44 minutes when Phil Baker's cross was palmed into his path by visiting keeper Steve Oliver.

But that was as good as it got for the hosts as Ilfracombe hit back when Yeo headed in on 61 minutes and just two minutes later Davey followed up after Nick Gingell had saved Mark Hughes' free kick.

Lye and substitute Jason Walsh rattled the woodwork late on but Corsham were outbattled and couldn't find a way through the subborn Ilfracombe rearguard.

Gingell said: "It was lilke the Alamo and we've got nothing again. I was disappointed with their goals, we were second to think with their second one, he got in and we were still watching him."

Meanwhile, Toolstation League Premier Division leaders Truro City beat Melksham Town 3-1 at Treyew Road to extend their lead at the top of the table to 13 points while Devizes Town beat struggling Bishop Sutton 2-1 at Nursteed Road.
