Lardner wonders what could have been

Calne Town 1-2 Truro City.

Positive Calne Town manager Robbie Lardner is still wondering 'what if' after a battling display against Truro City today.

The Lilywhites were in danger of being left behind at half time, as they trailed 2-0, but Lardner's words of wisdom at Bremhill View saw his side almost claim a point.

Danny Lardner's second half goal could have proved the springboard for an unlikely draw but his dad and manager was left wondering what might have been.

"We played the game without our first choice goalkeeper and three first choice defenders so have had to jiggle people about," said Lardner, missing keeper Steve Allison, key man Gary Blackwood and captain Steve Casey.

"To come out and put a performance like that was excellent. We just worked hard and made life difficult for them.

"I just wish we had a full squad here today, it is 'what if'."

It could have been so different for the hosts, had they not conceded two first half goals as Truro threatened to run riot. Stewart Yatton's glorious 25-yard volley arched into the bottom corner before Mark Vercesi's header somehow eluded Lee Matthews for the second.

"The first goal was a great goal and he is a player capable of doing it but the second goal was poor," said Lardner.

"The thing we know about Truro is, once they get infront, 99 times out of 100 they are going to stay there.

"But we changed it at half time, brought Danny Baker on and gave them something else to think about."

Baker's introduction, coupled with the outstanding John Else, caused Toolstation League Premier Division leaders Truro problems as the duo both went close.

Else was then instrumental in Lardner's goal when his looping cross was palmed out by Jason Chapman and Lardner lashed it into the net for his 18th goal of the season.

Truro rallied and Else cleared Tom Smith's header off the line but, try as they might, Calne couldn't force a leveller.

Lardner said: "John was excellent. He is a young lad, has a lot of energy and was a constant thorne in their side."
