DIVISION TWO: Corsham take title thanks to Webb’s goal
2:00pm Monday 30th April 2012 in News
CORSHAM United visited Chippenham West End with their destiny in their own hands and knowing that only a win for Kai Flack’s side would see them deny Steeple Ashton Rangers, who started the day in pole position.
In what was an evenly-matched contest played in atrocious conditions at Sutton Benger, Corsham did what they had to do and picked up maximum points courtesy of the narrowest of successes, winning 1-0.
Corsham had the majority of the first half chances but they were unable to breakdown a stubborn West End rearguard.
Corsham finally made one of their second-half chances count with Adrian Webb netted the only goal of the game to hand his side the title on goal difference.
But things could have been different had West End not had a goal ruled out for a foul on Corsham’s keeper Scott Dawdry who was between the sticks after an injury to Dayle Townsend.
For Corsham, their league win will make up for the disappointment of losing out in both the semi-final of the Knockout Cup and WG Parr Trophy.
For Steeple Ashton, who had to settle for second place, they will cursing a dip of form from late January to March where they managed just one win in six games which no doubt cost them top spot.
