CHIPPENHAM & DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Miller and Avellinos draw 10-goal thriller
4:00pm Monday 14th October 2013 in News
ON A wet and windy morning at the Beeches, Miller Sports A and AFC Avellinos played out a thrilling 5-5 draw at the Beeches.
Miller were the better side in the first half creating numerous chances. Dan Waylan opened the scoring with a precise driven shot from just outside the box.
Miller continued to press for a second but were hit on the counter attack a couple of times and after being lucky not to concede the first time Avellinos pulled it back to level with Nick Lockwood squaring things up.
This didn’t dishearten Miller and after a cross from a good run from Mike Stevens was cut out at the back post he controlled the ball sent over another looping cross that the keeper spilled to allow Dave Jenkins to tap in and regain the lead for the hosts.
The second half was a different story and Avellinos started brightly playing long balls up to Ben Butterfield, who was causing Miller all sorts of problems, and it from a probing Butterfield run that he restored parity and Avellions shocked their hosts as a Sam Jones effort gave the a 3-2 lead.
Miller got themselves back in the game with a second from Waylen who hit another long range strike to make it three each.
Another defensive error from Miller allowed Ben Butterfield in to hand the advantage back to Avellinos.
Miller turned to their star man Dan Waylen who bagged his third of the morning to squared things up at 4-4. Waylen then went from hero to zero when an attempted back pass allowed Butterfield to dink the ball over the advancing keeper for 5-4.
With five minutes to play Waylen reclaimed his hero status as he again provided the equaliser with a well-struck free kick from 20 yards into the top corner.
With seconds left to play Avellinos took a corner and Alex Coombs pulled off a magnificent save to deny Butterfield a fourth to keep the game level at 5-5.
FC Buscots 1 Potterne CFC 0
FIERCE local rivals FC Buscots and Potterne CFC met in the match of day at Nurstead Road, Devizes and as expected both teams called on their experienced players to put on a show in the driving rain.
Although the nailbiter didn’t produce a goal fest it did provide a winner as Buscots made a welcomed return to the summit thanks to the narrowest of 1-0 wins.
After a goalless first half Adam Bewley broke the deadlock with the only goal of the game. Buscots did have a chance to add a second when they were awarded a penalty.
But for a second week running Luke Enderby failed to find the net from the spot, his effort saved by keeper Will McKay.
Talbot FC 5 GRFC 1
A 5-1 WIN for Talbot FC at home to fellow struggles GRFC helped Tommy Ludford’s side ease their own relegation fears for the time being while leaving Tam Laidlaw’s bottom of the pile with no win from their three games to date.
Andy Law put Talbot in front, Aaron Clegg doubled their lead before a second from Law gave them a 3-0 half time lead.
A James Yates own goal reduced the deficit for GRFC before Andy Law completed his hat-trick to put Talbot back in change of the contest with the points being secured via a first goal for the club from debutant Kent Kauppinen.
