CHIPPENHAM & DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION: Defence is key to Social’s win
1:30pm Monday 30th September 2013 in News
AS EXPECTED, one of the top games of the weekend was the one at Poulton between Bradford Renegades and reigning S.K. Fruits Ltd Chippenham League Premier Division champions Biddestone Social.
Renegades, who have struggled to get to terms with life in the top flight, were expected to hand their guests an easy three points, but that wasn’t the case as Lance Davis side more than held their own and played their part in a classic that was eventually won 3-2 by Biddestone.
Renegades can consider themselves very unlucky not to have got at least a point from from the game and had it not been for Ryan Baggs and Ollie Webb, who were outstanding in the heart of the Social defence to keep the shackles on striker Sam Jordan, the home team may well have taken all three.
Biddestone had a half-time lead of 3-1 thanks to stunning volleyed goal from Leon Greenland, and two fortunate goals, the first a penalty which Martin Johnson slotted home and a Dan Price own goal. Mark Robinson’s tidy finish before half time gave Renegades some hope.
Price made up for his own goal when he buried a header to reduce the deficit to the odd goal and Renegades pressed and pressed as they threw everything at the champions.
Biddestone can consider themselves somewhat fortunate to take maximum points after only creating one clear cut chance in the second half which was well saved by Darren Phoenix.
FC Colerne 4 AFC Melksham 3
FC COLERNE and AFC Melksham met at the former’s Bath Road ground looking for their first win of the season and it was the home team that came up trumps thanks to a thrilling 4-3 success that gave them their first-ever win over their opponents.
Colerne trailed by the odd goal at the break a lead that had been given to Melksham by Sam Puckett, whose stunning headed own goal separated the teams after 45 minutes.
After the interval the game ebbed and flowed and produced a feast of football as Jordan Kirk add a double for Melksham but his brace proved worthless as Adam Flitcroft netted twice for the hosts, with Puckett atoning for his first half own goal and Josh Peacock scoring a fourth to hand Colerne victory.
Semington Rovers 2 Westbury Rangers 5
WESTBURY Rangers kept their fine start to the new campaign going with a 5-2 win at Semington Rovers.
Ashley Groves gave Semington the lead on eight minutes with Gary Tugwell the visitors to Littlemarsh back on level terms in the 30th minute.
Semington reclaimed the lead thanks to a second of the morning from Groves who made it 2-1 on 65 minutes.
Westbury restored parity in the 70th minute with Sam McQueen scoring his first of a 10-minute treble, his second came in the 75th minute and five minutes later he scored direct from a corner to make it 4-2.
Mark Young made the points safe for Shaun Gardiner’s Rangers side when he found the net on 82 minutes to complete Rangers nap hand.
