CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO PREVIEW: Leaders face Somerford test
3:00pm Friday 8th March 2013 in News
WITH the race to become Division Two champions looking as if it will go the distance, leaders Staverton FC face tricky game at the weekend when they visit third-placed Somerford.
With four games remaining, Aaron Latchem’s Staverton side face one of their the toughest challenges to their hopes of lifting the tiltle.
Staverton have a great record against their hosts and will be bidding for a fourth straight win over Spike Chandler’s side but they will have to be aware of complacency as the home team are capable of getting something from the game.
They only lost the reverse fixture 2-1 and recently stunned Goatacre with a 7-0 win.
Another match that whets the appetite is at Sutton Benger when fellow promotion hopefuls Chippenham West End and White Horse FC are set for their second meeting of the season.
White Horse romped to a 7-0 success at the turn of the year and Clive Black’s side know that nothing than a win will be good enough if they wish to remain in the hunt for a top two finish.
West End held Staverton to a 3-3 draw a few weeks ago and they will be confident that they can avenge their earlier defeat to White Horse by at least getting a point from what ought to be a close game.
Wren FC may have lost their fight for second division survival last weekend, but Carl Murray’s side are desperate to claim a first win of the season before the curtain finally comes down on their campaign.
The Calne-based side visit Miller Sports, who are the other team currently in the drop zone.
With three games remaining this one will give Wren their best chance of breaking their duck but having already lost 7-1 to Miller the signs don’t look that good and Wren are likely to slump to defeat number 18.
With just one victory in 10 games, Sutton Benger know they will be up against it when they visit a Southwick Wanderers outfit who have already beaten them 5-3 this term and who go into the game having won three on the spin.
Wanderers are hot favourites to put together a four-match winning run for the first time since early 2009. The result is expected to be close with the hosts tipped to take the points.
