CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE DIVISION TWO: Staverton maintain slender lead at the summit

STAVERTON'S dreams of clinching a third straight promotion remain on track and with a one-point lead over Goatacre.

With just four games remaining Aaron Latchem’s side looking good to finish the season at Division Two champions.

Staverton were at their very best as they blew Sutton Benger away with a 7-2 win.

Jason Povey was on top form as he scored four of the seven, which included three spectacular long range efforts.

Povey got Staverton underway and his second made it 2-0.

Zac Manna added number three and Levi Wood got in on the act before Povey completed a first half treble.

Benger rallied at the start of the second half with goals from James Weston and Matt White giving them a brief period of respite, before further goals from Povey and Simon Parfitt wrapped up win number 12 of the season for Staverton.

GRFC 1 Chippenham West End 2

CHIPPENHAM West End had to come from behind to keep promotion hopes alive.

A 2-1 win over GRFC was as thrilling as their earlier meeting which the West End won 4-3 but Leighton Joyce will be happy that they avoided a potential banana skin that could have ended their hopes of finishing in the top two.

Robbie Burton’s excellent strike from 18 yards gave GRFC their half time lead.

West End came out fighting in the second half and they restored parity through Scott Nash who headed home an excellent cross from Dave Byatt. 

Nash wrapped up victory for the West End with a tremendous effort that saw his long-range lob beat the GRFC keeper to hand his team maximum points.

They consolidated fifth spot, some nine points of an automatic promotion place but with as many as five games in hand on the sides above them they won’t give up the chase.

Miller Sports 1 Goatacre CC FC 3

GOATACRE CC put their last two poor performances behind them with a 3-1 win at relegation threatened Miller Sports.

The win for the cricketers means that they remain one point adrift of leaders Staverton but, after the last two games, manager Sam Parish will be pleased with his team's showing in what was a vulnerable game for the villagers.

Harry Warner, who is on a fine goalscoring run, put Goatacre in front before the break.

Danny Horwood doubled their lead and a second from Warner made it 3-0.

Miller’s player-manager Mike Stevens scored his team's consolation, his excellent 18-yard volley five minutes from time gave him his first ever goal for the Miller Boys.  

Wren FC 1 Kings Arms (All Cannings) 9

AFTER going close to getting their first points of the season last weekend, basement side Wren FC were hoping to end a 17-match losing run when hosting an out-of-sorts Kings Arms (All Cannings) side.

But it wasn’t to be as Kings Arms ended their own five-match winless run with a 9-1 success.

Ben House, who failed to turn up for the Kings Arms last weekend, was given a start and he duly repaid manager Jim Wilson by put the villagers ahead.

Craig Garner dragged Wren level but goals from Simon Drewitt and Rob Hannah gave Kings Arms a 3-1 interval lead.

The second half was a one-sided affair with Kings Arms bagging six unanswered goals.

Three more from House saw him have a debut to remember, Simon Drewitt scored two more to complete his hat-trick and a second of the game for Hannah made up the victors' tally.
