DIVISION FOUR: Cosmos battle to win at boggy Goatacre

MELKSHAM Cosmos narrowly edged out FC United of Chippenham 2-1 in only one of two Division Four games that survived the overnight rain.

After a cagey opening period, with no real chances for either side, Jason Hull opened the scoring for Cosmos when he ran on to a Joe Griffiths long ball, outpaced the defence and finished with a sublime drive into the far corner.

From here, both sides had chances before half time, with a Griffiths header brilliantly saved by keeper Colin Hayward.

The second half started brightly for United, as they created a number of openings from distance, but never really troubled Shaun Jenkins in the Cosmos goal.

The Cosmos worked their way back into the match and created a few long range chances for themselves, but it was when one of those chances broke down that United were able to counter for their equaliser, when after some good work down the right hand side, a pull back was powered in by Callum Bell to make it one apiece.

With just 15 minutes to go, both teams went on the attack, looking to take all two points – and it was Cosmos who grabbed a late winner with just a minute remaining, when another Griffiths header from an excellent Marc Scammell cross was well saved, but Lewis Taylor tapped home on the line from the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

Both teams played the game in a very good spirit, and the match was brilliantly refereed by Adrian Hunt.

Oakhill FC 1 Trowbridge Town Supporters Club 2

Trowbridge Town Supporters Club, who had not played since early December, were looking at another blank weekend after their game away at Worton & Cheverell (Sunday) was postponed but with Oakhill’s visit to Trowbridge Rangers also falling victim of the weather, Oakhill agreed to host the supporters’ club at their Kington Langley base.

Played in somewhat tricky conditions it was the visitors who were the happier of the teams come the final whistle as a 2-1 victory for Kevin Williams side kept their promotion challenge going in the right direction.

The supporters’ club played really well in the first half and were given the lead by Sean O’Brien, with his first goal since returning to the club from AFC Melksham. An excellent team move led to Scott Wallace delivering the perfect cross for James Crawford who made no mistake as he planted the ball home for 2-0.

Oakhill made a game of it in the second half and dragged themselves into the contest when Jermaine Brown, with his first ever goal for the club, toe poked the ball home from 20 yards but his effort proved to be just a consolation as the visitors saw the game out to claim a fifth successive win, that moved them into the top half of the table.
