WILTSHIRE JUNIOR CUP: Howe hoping to end Junior Cup famine

AS MANAGER of Trowbridge & District League North Bradley Saints and Boomsbury, Ben Howe may have won everything on offer, but the major prize that still eludes him is the Wiltshire Junior Cup.

For their first match in this season's competition Boomsbury were on the road at Chisledon District who are struggling near the foot of the Swindon League first division and as expected the result went the way of Howe’s men who were woeful in front of goal but still claimed a 5-1 win.

Boomsbury were two up inside 10 minutes thanks to goals from Carl Davies and Booker Woodford.

A lapse in concentration from Darren Jones led to Chisledon reducing the arrears but after that it was all one-way but with Boomsbury and in particular Scott Askew guilty of missing a host of chances the home team remained in the game at half time.

Another promising start to the second half saw Boomsbury open up a 4-1 advantage inside seven minutes thanks to a second from Woodford and Matt Jones well taken effort.

But they had to wait until a lot later for their fifth and final goal with Steve Jackson netting for the visitors who on this performance know that they will have to play a lot better if they are to have a chance of winning the Junior Cup this season.

Trowbridge Wanderers 2 Wanderers 6

TROWBRIDGE Wanderers were handed a tricky home tie with Wanderers FC who are currently third in the Salisbury League Premier Division and it was the visitors to Lambrok Road who came out on top with a comfortable 6-2 victory over Jake Wayman’s side.

Wanderers had the tie won in the first half after opening up a 4-1 lead.

Will Bayley scored both for the home team which proved too be consolations as two second half goals from the impressive looking Salisbury League outfit made it a good afternoon’s work for the visitors.

Westwood News 3 Steeple Ashton 1

A WEEK after Westwood News defeated Steeple Ashton 3-0 in the Trowbridge & District League's own Knockout cup competition, the two teams were paired together in the Wiltshire Junior Cup and a week on the outcome was the same with Westwood progressing to the second round by virtue of their 3-1 success.

Westwood took the lead on 11 minutes when Tom Rooney’s thumping header from Josh Maguire’s cross made it 1-0.

Rooney doubled his teams lead on 28 minutes with a brilliant individual effort that saw him cut in from the wing before unleashing a thunderbolt to make it 2-0 at the break, but had it not been for their keeper Aaron Harford who produced a number of great stops to keep Westwood in front the outcome may well have been a lot different.

Steeple Ashton raised their game and had the better of the second half, hitting the bar and seeing the impressive Harford deny Marc Sheppard with a couple of excellent stops before Sheppard finally got the better of him on 79 minutes to set up a grandstand finish.

The hosts finally wrapped up in injury time when Tom Rooney hit his and Westwood’s third to maintain Mark Hurkett’s side impressive start to the campaign.
