FOOTBALL: Winstone's acclaim
3:50pm Thursday 27th September 2012 in Football By Dan Barnes
MALMESBURY Victoria boss Simon Winstone was pleased with the reaction he saw from his players against Hook Norton last weekend, despite their losing run in the league stretching to eight games.
Last week, the Vics were thrashed 4-1 by local rivals Cricklade Town and manager Winstone was less than impressed with his side’s display.
But despite Malmesbury going down to late goals in Oxfordshire, Winstone thinks that there were positives to take for his side and said: “There was definitely the right reaction from the players and there wasn’t much between the two sides.
“We missed a few chances and they scored two good strikes towards the end of the game and there wasn’t much we could do about those.
“I was probably a little bit disappointed not to have gotten something out of the game but there were definitely things to be positive about.”
This weekend, the Vics have a break from league action when they host Buckinghamshire-based Hellenic League Division One East outfit Penn & Tylers Green in the first round of the Challenge Cup.
Midfielder Jon Smith and striker Jordan Mathews return to the squad after missing the trip to Hook Norton but Max Sparrow is unavailable.
