TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION TWO CUP FINAL PREVIEW: Eagles dare to land upset
12:30pm Thursday 3rd May 2012 in Football
DARREN Jones will lead Boomsbury out at Warminster Town’s Weymouth Street ground tonight ahead of their Briken Motors-sponsored Division Two Cup final clash with Calne Eagles.
The game has been confirmed as definitely on by Warminster Town this afternoon.
For Jones, it will be the fifth time in 13 months that he has captained Boomsbury in a cup final, three of which have ended in defeat.
The last of those was three weeks ago when they suffered a 3-2 defeat against Westbury United Reserves in the final of the Knockout Cup. While Boomsbury are no strangers to cup finals this will be Eagles' first since they joined the league in 2004.
Boomsbury appear to hold the psychological advantage, having already beaten their opponents twice this season, on both occasions winning 3-1 and finishing the season as champions 29 points ahead of Roy Wenham’s side.
Eagles ended the campaign in seventh spot so the underdog tag for the final will be befitting as for a third time this term Ben Howe’s table toppers should prove too strong for their opponents.
Boomsbury missed out on a preliminary round match and started their cup run with a 2-1 victory away at Bratton.
John Baker and Steve Jackson scoring the goals that saw them set up a semi-final showdown with fierce rivals North Bradley where once again a 2-1 success was good enough to see them through to the final.
Scott Askew put Boomsbury ahead and a stunning long range strike from Mike Grieve sealed their win.
Eagles route to the final saw them host relegated FC Northbridge in the preliminary round and although they made hard work of things, Adam Bewley’s hat-trick saw them triumph 3-2.
Next up for Eagles was a trip to Holt and once again Bewley was their goal scoring hero as he grabbed another three timer, Karl Sharratt adding a fourth to give them a 4-2 success.
Heytesbury stood in their way of a first-ever final but, thanks to goals from Stuart Windsor and Bewley who scored his seventh in three games, they gained a 2-1 win. Both teams hope to have a clean bill of health for the game and Bewley, who was part of the Boomsbury squad who tasted success as third division champions and Spring Cup winners last term, would love to put one over his former club and help Calne clinch their first-ever piece of silverware.
But the odds are against them as Boomsbury are red-hot favourites to add the Division Two Cup to their Division Two winners trophy and finish the campaign with another league and cup double.
The match is scheduled for a 7.30pm kick-off.
