TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION THREE: Melksham A pip Westbury Town to second place
1:30pm Monday 30th April 2012 in Football
A WEEK after they witnessed Melksham Town Reserves miss out on the runners-up spot in Division One, Melksham Town A hosted Spring Cup winners Westbury Town at the Beeches Shaw with the winners guaranteed the third Division runners-up spot behind long-time champions Lamb FC. Melksham knew that they had to take all three points from the match to take the automatic promotion place.
Westbury, who started the day in second place, needed just a draw for them to claim their second piece of silverware inside five days.
Westbury were unable to match their highs of Tuesday evening when they thumped Westwood Social Club 6-1 and it will be Melksham who will be playing second division football next term as a 3-2 triumph gave Wesley Frith’s side their ninth successive victory.
It saw them leapfrog their guests to steal second place away from Andy Cousins' side.
After a goalless first half Dan Moore put Melksham ahead on 56 minutes and two minutes later Moore doubled his team's lead albeit with the help of a deflection.
Westbury halved the deficit on 78 minutes courtesy of Jason Windsor but their joy was shortlived as less than two minutes had passed and Melksham had regained a two-goal cushion, Moore completing his hat-trick to make it 3-1.
Westbury grabbed their second of the game on 91 minutes, but Ryan Mead’s goal was little more than a consolation as Melksham were able to see out the remainder of the game to take the spoils and with it the runners-up spot.
