EXECUTIVE BRIEF: First part of Paolo’s project has been a great success

I WOULD argue that although it was a great day for the club on Saturday, securing promotion at Gillingham, there was a bit of a disappointment that we lost the game 3-1.
It’s always slightly flat if you manage to get promoted despite a defeat but maybe Paolo choreographed it so that we could lift the League Two trophy in front of a sell-out crowd at the County Ground this weekend.
I also think that everyone has moved on from the problems caused by the players’ infamous night out last week too.
From the start of the season, our aims were to win promotion and then lift the title. Stage one of that project has already been achieved and Paolo and his team deserve all the credit for that.
League One was a league we should never have come out of, at least not downwardly, and the pressure has been on Paolo and the team ever since.
When you hire someone like Paolo Di Canio, you know that genius doesn’t come wrapped up nicely with a pink bow.
There are all the other things that come as part of the package and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
Paolo shoots from the hip and tells it like it is and if he said that he considered resigning around 45 days ago, then it’s probably to do with something that he was feeling at the time. We’ve got no worries and I’m sure it’s something that’s passed now.
I’d also like to remind you that a Paolo DI Canio XI will be taking on a select XI on May 2 in a charity match for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. They are our sponsored charity this year and it should be a great evening.
It’s being organised by Steve Weller, our community development executive, and he’s done a great job so far.
