TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Calne Town 1 Shrewton United 0
10:32am Tuesday 10th April 2012 in Football
Calne Town claimed their third straight win with victory over Shrewton United on Easter Monday.
The first 45 minutes was a pretty quiet affair with more cautions than goals but after the restart, the Lilywhite’s management talk must have done a little good as Calne were on the attack straight from the whistle.
Six minutes in, Kyle Rigley won a corner and from the kick, he launched a superb cross into the area for Tyler Sibbick to stroke home then only goal of the game.
On Good Friday, a slick passing performance by the Lilywhites saw them produce a stunning 4-1 victory over title-chasing local rivals Melksham Town.
Calne were the team that were up for this encounter and it showed as early as the second minute when Tyler Sibbick was fouled.
From the resultant free-kick, Lee Stevens headed across towards the back post - Melksham keeper Tom Drewitt thought the effort it was going wide when in fact it went in.
Calne were playing a good passing game but Melksham were lobbing balls over the top for the front two to run on to.
The Calne back line continued to snuff out any threat Melksham threw at them and good football paid off again in the 26th minute when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out to the right hand side.
Dan Lardner launched the perfect ball into the six-yard box for Tyler Sibbick to finish for Calne’s second.
After the break, Calne continued as before and it took only six minutes for them to take a three goal lead when Tyler Sheppard launched a ball into the far side of the 18 yard box for Levi Cox to head back to Sibbick to score his second. The same should have happened two minutes later but this time the Sibbick's touch was evasive as the ball went wide.
Melksham were now intent on unsettling the Lilywhites as the fouls and tackles flew in and on 56 minutes, the hosts' Stuart Greener pulled down Sibbick and then reacted whilst on the floor with a punch missed by the referee.
The two players were cautioned after ensuing handbags by several players from both sides.
The free kick was launched in by captain Lardner for Cox to fire on target.
His shot was stopped by the Melksham shot stopper but again he failed to hold it and Rigley reacted the quickest to score Calne’s fourth.
Calne host Hengrove Athletic on Wednesday night.
