TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: Devizes Town 1 Westbury United 3
10:16am Tuesday 10th April 2012 in Football
Devizes Town will finish bottom of the Toolstation League First Division after they were beaten by county rivals Westbury United on Easter Monday.
In an even first half, both teams struggled to come to terms with a hard pitch and swirling wind.
There were chances at both ends - Luke Stanley with a free kick, Beau Blakeman from 25 yards and Mark Young with a misplaced header all forced home keeper Lewis Porter to make saves while United keeper Alex Shaftoe made a good stop when Paul Gittins got through, Danny Baker fired the rebound over the bar and Luke Enderby sent a skidding effort across the face of goal.
The opening goal was scored by Young on 42 minutes when Gary Tugwell took a free kick from the halfway line and the ball fell to Young, who struck a great finish through a crowded penalty area for his 11th goal of the season.
Town made a flying start to the second half and Shaftoe made a save from Robbie Mitchell after he had burst forward from the kick off.
Jamie Bayes' side equalised three minutes in when Baker broke through on the right and his fine shot was parried by Shaftoe into the path of the onrushing Enderby, who made no mistake from close range.
Westbury got themselves back in front on 56 with one of the goals of the season.
Excellent play on the left wing by Stanley allowed him to play the ball in to Tarick Yachou and he took a touch before volleying spectacularly over Porter and underneath the crossbar from just outside the box.
Devizes’ Mitchell and his namesake in the United team both tried their luck midway through the half with the home player firing wide from 25 yards and the Westbury midfielder’s effort from the edge of the box bringing a save out of Porter.
Town threatened no more and it was just a matter of whether United would add to their tally - Young had a goal disallowed for offside before a brilliant team goal made it 3-1 on 78 minutes.
Passes went from Yachou to Stanley, then infield to Tugwell and on to Mitchell who found Matt Mead running forward on the right and he struck the ball powerfully to Porter’s left and into the net.
Porter had one final save to make when Blakeman ran through in the last minute before shooting fiercely only to be denied again by the home keeper.
On Good Friday, Enderby and Mitchell were both in target as Devizes earned a point in a 2-2 draw at Shrewton United.
They finish thier season at home to fellow strugglers Wellington on April 21.
