DAVE Clayton hailed Melksham Town ’s win at league leaders Gillingham Town last weekend as a pivotal result in their season.
Luke Smith and Gary Higdon put Melksham ahead and Josh Robinson missed the chance to put Clayton’s side 3-0 up from the penalty spot.
Ryan Murray’s free-kick pulled a goal back for the hosts, who had Ben Salem sent off late on, but Melksham held on to close the gap at the top of the table to just a point.
“They had a lot of the ball but I thought we were better in the areas where it mattered and that could be a result that will help decide where we finish this season,” said Clayton.
“They took on board the lessons from last week (a 4-3 loss to Shrewton United in the Wiltshire Senior Cup) and defended much better.”
