Big guns romp into last eight of Knockout Cup

Chippenham Sunday League:HOLDERS Corsham Centre hit North Star A for six to reach the quarter finals of the Presstoprint sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup.

The Priestly Grove outfit were the last side to take any points off the Premier Division leaders, a 2-2 draw in April 2003, but goals from Scott Lye, Simon Gray (2), James Lye (2) and Russell Gibbings eased them into the last eight.

Division One pace-setters Spencer Sports were thumped 6-1 by top-flight outfit Biddestone Social. Spencer missed four good chances to open the scoring before Biddestone finally broke the deadlock on 41 minutes when Kevin Banks turned home a Gary Banks cross.

A minute later Spencer were left deflated as Dan Lardner latched onto a Jamie Lyons cross to lob home, and Lardner then made it 3-0 after the break.

Spencer had the chance through Dan King to reduce the gap but his twice-taken 70th minute penalty was saved by Kevin Read after he had converted his first attempt only for the referee to rule it out for encroachment.

James Taylor pulled a goal back for Spencer but it proved to be their only consolation as further goals in the final ten minutes from Lardner, to complete his-hat trick, John O'Meara from the penalty spot and Rob Pocock made up Biddestone's half dozen.

Corsham Cricket Club overcame a potential banana skin when they breezed past Second Division Southwick Sports 5-1. Dave Kilmurray scored a hat-trick while fellow old boy Rob Humphries added the other two. Gary Rice replied.

Parsons Nose claimed the only surprise result of the round when they ended the interests of Premier side Sherston Town. The Second Division team continued their giant killing act as they followed up earlier wins over West Lavington and Potterne with a 5-3 success over the 2004 winners.

Parsons Nose had Ricky Gullis dismissed early on for foul and abusive language and then later had Darren Whiting sent off for a crude challenge on Antony Vizard, but goals from Mark James (3), and Steve Pegler (2) saw the Melksham-based team through. Ed Wilkins (2) and Jake Fisher replied for the losers.

In the all-Premier Division clash, last seasons beaten finalists Westbury Rangers A defeated Bradford News 4-1 thanks to goals from Marc Lanfear, Sam Tucker and two own goals. Russell Francis replied.

DOMINANT Potterne had to settle for a 2-2 draw as visitors Christian Malford snatched another late equaliser to move top of the division.

Captain Chris Pitman stepped up to fire a hotly-disputed penalty home in the 88th minute to rescue a point.

Pitman had set-up Mark Golledge to give Malford the lead inside 15 minutes before goals from Myles Hickton and Stephen House put Potterne 2-1 in front. Malford keeper Ben Munns was in top form to keep the leaders in the game before the late dramatics.

Chippenham Police ended their terrible 18-match run without a victory to move off the bottom after beating Horse and Groom 3-1.

Drainage problems at The Devizes Police HQ meant their pitch was unplayable with the game switched to Groom's Leighton Sports Centre.

Craig Holden followed-up Jason Roberts' spilled shot to put the Police in front at half time. Further goals from Tim Culling and Tony Kerwick, either side of Richard Hunt's consolation, saw the boys in blue leap-frog their opponents at the wrong end of the table.

Semington Rovers suffered their first defeat of the season as they fell to an unexpected 2-1 loss at Colerne.

Ian Gray's opener for Semington was cancelled out by a Jake Jefferies double. Semington will be out for immediate revenge when the teams meet in the WG Parr Trophy.

VICTORIES for Kings Arms (Trowbridge) and Pig and Whistle United relegated leaders Kingfisher down to third spot.

Kings Arms completed a league double over The Crown Devizes with a 4-1 success to reclaim pole position. Tarick Yachou scored on his debut for the Arms to give them the lead and Dean Murden made it 2-0 at the break.

Leigh Wells pulled a goal back for The Crown before Kings Arms substitute Sam Simpson and Nathan Flower put the game out of reach.

Pig and Whistle moved up to second spot after a 4-2 triumph over White Horse. United had built up a 4-0 lead by the interval with goals from Dave Jenkins, Adie Cooper and a brace from Steve Badger. White Horse rallied in the second period as goals from Sam Johnson and Chris Turk halved the deficit.

Mark Campbell notched a hat-trick as Virgin Mobile smashed nine past FC Bradford. Jamie Birleson, Alex Hushcroft and Richard Bliha all hit doubles in Virgin's 9-1 victory.

For the second time in three weeks Chippenham United RAOB were unable to raise a side, Steeple Ashton missing out.

Sutton Benger were unable to host Biddestone Arms as their pitch had been taken over by the Caravan Club.

BLUE Circle still can't find a win after they went down 4-0 at Corsham Park Rangers.

Luke Wolf chipped home Rangers' opener and George Bentley headed home number two on 40 minutes. Second half goals from Kevin Hodkinson and Warren Jones sealed the points.

Fascia Graphics' 8-1 defeat of Trowbridge Town Supporters Club took them up into second place. Fascia took the lead after four minutes when a Neurin Jones thunderbolt from 20 yards hit the crossbar and rebounded off keeper Robbie Newton into the net. Mark Smith continued his scoring run with a low drive to make it 2-0 at the break.

Smith scored his second from a quickly taken free kick before Robin Walker pulled one back for Trowbridge. Fascia substitute Andrew Palmer, Smith, to complete his hat-trick, an own goal and two for Steve Allison completed the rout.

Karl Sharrett fired North Star ahead B in the first half only for Kevin Farrer to hit Westbury Rangers B's second half equaliser.

Wheatsheaf FC drew 0-0 with Pack Horse Rangers. Rangers' Glyn Pascoe filled in well for the injured Del Llewellyn between the sticks and his team mate Shahram Hemarti had the best chance of the game to win the contest but he put the ball over the bar from two yards out when it looked easier to score.

Sir Audley's Arms made it five wins on the bounce after destroying Somerford 8-2. Luke Gullick struck three, Nick Gapper two and Kieron Smith, Jamie Collier and Stuart Shipway one each for the Arms who moved up three places in the table to fourth. John Goad and Chris Yeo hit Somerford's replies.

WITH Cooper Avon inactive, the Southgate Inn claimed the victory against KSM that took them back to the top of Division Four.

Julian Alexander and Nick Taylor both hit the net twice with David Lloyd adding number five for Southgate. Steve Warner (2) replied for KSM.

AFC Springfield took on a White Hart Combe team whose centre forward pairing of Bunny Fernandez and Phil Martin totalled 86 years between them.

In the end it was age that out-witted the youth of Springfield as Combe hit back from falling behind to a Mark Coles goal to win 2-1, James Hearsay and Ben Thomas scoring for Combe whose keeper Trevor Rawlings turned in a man of the match performance between the sticks.

A Mark Torr double saw Rising Sun twice lead Wanderers who hit back on both occasions to claim a 2-2 draw. Torr's opener was erased by Dylan Turner, whose textbook header found the net following a long throw from Damian Shepherd.

Torr regained the lead for the Sun but once again Wanderers hit back, Shepherd turned scorer when he collected a pass from Craig Harman, flicked it over an advancing defender before poking the home.

Dean Kerr scored both goals for The Crown FC to earn them a share of the spoils with Chippenham West End Club, who replied through Danny Kilgour and Joe Court.

West End had the chance to win the game but Dave Hext missed a penalty.

GOALS from Nick Corbett and Tom Pang couldn't prevent Holt FC from losing 6-2 at Wroughton WMC.

North Bradley's debutant Rob Coombes had an excellent game but he was unable to prevent the villagers from crashing out 5-0 at last season's beaten finalists Royal Oak Salisbury.

A frozen pitch combined with fog forced the postponement of Dog and Fox Ashley's game with eight-time winners Greyhound.
