Vet Hunt scores assistants job

THE eagerly-awaited Premier Division clash between Highworth and Shrivenham will have to wait for another day after their meeting was called off on Saturday.

The match was one of three postponed in the top flight, but Fairford did see some action and picked up a point at Ardley United.

Behind to a ninth-minute goal by the hosts, veteran Paul Hunt was Fairford's saviour, equalising in the 68th minute to earn the draw.

And Hunt was last night confirmed as the club's new assistant manager, replacing Charlie Carter.

Division One West was also badly affected by the poor conditions, but there was an excellent win for Wootton Bassett on the road.

They maintained their mid-table position with a 3-1 win at their struggling rivals.

In a match that produced nine bookings, Bassett got off to the worst start possible as they fell a goal down within two minutes.

Richard Mace rose above Dwayne Quinn to head in a Jason Court corner from eight yards.

Bassett settled and nearly equalised two minutes later but Steve Tucker shot straight at Dan Harding after Matty Bennett squared.

Tucker eventually got his name on the scoresheet on 11 minutes as a great first time ball from Bennett fell at his feet and he easily slotted under Harding.

On 19 minutes, Ben Gascoyne put Bassett ahead. He cut in from the left and twisted and turned his way past three Clanfield defenders before tapping the ball into the far corner to finish off a great solo move.

Clanfield's failure to clear their lines led to Tucker's second five minutes later.

A Bennett shot from 20 yards was deflected and parried away by Harding only for the ball to fall to Tucker, who tapped into the empty goal.
