Devizes finally on the up after poor start

Football: Devizes Town manager Kevin Whitbread believes his struggling team have turned the corner after they climbed off the foot of the table this week.

Town bagged their first win of the season with a 2-1 triumph against Welton Rovers on Saturday and followed it up with a 1-1 home draw with Sherborne Town on Tuesday night.

And joint boss Kevin Whitbread is sure the club is going in the right direction after a dismal start.

He said: "Things are starting to look a lot better now we have some more points on the board.

"The players' morale was pretty good even when things weren't going our way but the last two games have really given the lads a lift."

Devizes fell behind in the 20th minute against Sherborne but then upped the tempo and got a deserved equaliser ten minutes from the end thanks to new signing David Percival.

Percival, who joined from Melksham Town, jinked past two defenders and slotted the ball home off the inside of the post.

Shaun Moffat, Devizes' other joint boss, felt they were unlucky not to get the three points.

He said: I was a little disappointed in the end we didn't get the win.

"It was fast and furious but once we got our act together we were very good and started to control the game.

"We had chance after chance and eventually equalised, and then we bombarded their goal "But I'm happy with four points from two games, it's good to get a little run going."

"We're building a fairly new side here and it takes time to get the players working together.

"So far we've not been able to field the same 11 two games on the trot. We need some continuity."

On Saturday Devizes visit Shortwood United in the FA Vase.
