Aljofree thrilled as Town's debt nightmare ends

Football: Swindon Town skipper Hasney Aljofree is thrilled the club will finally come out of its debt nightmare tomorrow.

Debts owed to a Company Voluntary Arrangement and the Inland Revenue were paid up front when chairman Andrew Fitton took over in January.

However the club will complete the last remaining payment to its other creditors tomorrow clearing around £5 million worth of debt.

Speaking from his holiday in Singapore, experienced defender Aljofree said it would allow manager Maurice Malpas to delve into the transfer market this summer.

He said: "It's been a long time coming but it's great news for the club and for the fans.

"The debt has been a real problem but this should take the pressure off the managers shoulders. It will allow the manager to keep hold of our best players and bring in some new lads.

"I hope we can bring in three or four new players. I think that's what the manager is looking for."

Chairman Fitton is excited to be leading the club into a more certain future.

He said: "Come Friday Swindon will be in a better shape financially than they have been for at least a decade, probably longer.

"We will be in as good a shape as any football club outside the Premiership.

"We know there have been some very tough times over the last few months but that chapter can be closed on Friday."
