Kieran tracked by FA Cup winners

Woodborough footballer Kieran Stephens has been earmarked for an academy spot with FA Cup winners Portsmouth after being spotted by a talent scout.

Eleven-year-old Kieran, who plays for Laverstock and Ford in the Southampton Tyro League, scored 22 goals last season and his performances have also attracted interest from Chelsea and Southampton.

Pompey scouts will continue to monitor Kieran's progress with a view to him joining their academy when he turns 14.

And the interest has certainly caught Kieran's imagination, despite being a Manchester United fan.

His mum Faye said: "He was cheering for Portsmouth in the FA Cup final last week.

"Kieran's been playing football since he could walk.

"I'm happy for him to pursue a career in football because I know it's what he really wants.

"He's done really well in his SATS exams and is above average at school.

"I think he'll be able to do well with his schoolwork and still keep going with the football."

Kieran's performances this season have also attracted praise from his manager Carlo Downie.

He said: "Kieran has a good eye for goal, has quick feet and takes on players.

"The fact he can beat defenders means he can also play on the wing as well as up front.

"He's a level headed lad with a good temperament and gets on well with his team mates."

Kieran has also contributed to his school's sporting success.

Woodborough Primary School PE co-ordinator Michelle Ashby said: "He's scored goals in all his matches.

"He has a great attitude and is very enthusiastic towards everything he does. He is an asset to the school."

Kieran's sporting prowess has meant some sacrifices for the family.

Step dad Chris said: "There is a hell of a lot of travelling.

"We have to drive to matches in Reading, Southampton and Portsmouth. It takes up all of Sunday as well as training on Thursday evenings in Laverstock but it's worth it."
