Full time Sunday 9th September

Match report from the County Ground, Swindon

Coca Cola League One

Fulltime Swindon Town 0 Yeovil Town 1

What was only the second, County Ground League encounter between the two sides took place on Sunday afternoon as Swindon Town entertained their Somerset neighbours Yeovil Town.

Swindon manager Paul Sturrock had plenty to think about after his second string team scored four times to eliminate Brentford from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in midweek, but opted for the same starting line-up as the previous Saturday, with a very strong bench to chose from.

Six minutes into the game, Michael Pook struck a 25 yard shot after a Lee Peacock lay-off, but ex-Swindon keeper Steve Mildenhall clutched the ball comfortably to his midriff, and three minutes later, nice chest control from Lee Peacock left Christian Roberts in to cross from the right, and again Mildenhall was up to the task, safely collecting the high ball.

The game continued in Swindon's favour when Sofiene Zaaboub's corner was slid home by Jerel Ifil at the back post, but referee Marriner cancelled the effort out for an infringement.

On the quarter of an hour mark, Yeovil's Anthony Barry tested Phil Smith in the Swindon goal from long range, but Swindon's defence was dealing comfortably with whatever the visitors could muster.

On 21 minutes Peacock was unable you get over a Zaaboub cross on the far post, his headed effort going over the bar, then the same two combined with the same result from a corner.

With two new strikers on the bench ready to show what they could do, changes looked inevitable before the final whistle.

Blair Sturrock struck straight at Mildenhall shortly after half an hour was up, then Roberts collected Craig Easton's ball on the right, cut inside and his low shot was palmed away by Mildenhall.

Most of the game was one-way traffic towards the Somerset side's goal, but when Jack Smith upended Lloyd Owusu in Swindon's penalty area, the home crowd was relived to see Marriner wave play-on. Jamie Vincent crashed a 30-yarder just wide of the Yeovil right hand post, then Vincent turned provider when Sturrock's header from the defender's ball failed to trouble Mildenhall.

The interval saw new general manager Jose Vega introduced to the crowd by chairman designate Jim Little, and then the game recommenced with Peacock combining with Roberts, for the Welshman to cut inside but fire wide of the left post.

The second half slowly saw the visitors stamp more authority on the game, and Paul Sturrock decided on a tactical reshuffle. Off went son Blair and Roberts, to introduce loan striker Simon Cox and midfield man Jon-Paul McGovern

Peacock continued to work hard up front and produced a couple of efforts, but Yeovil were looking increasingly able to deal with what Swindon could muster.

Ritchie Jones, on loan from Manchester United, was causing Swindon problems from set pieces, and in the 77th minute his corner from the left was met powerfully by the bandaged head of top scorer Owusu to fire past a stagnant Swindon defence and open the scoring for the visitors.

Then Barry forced a full length save from Smith as Yeovil shook Swindon, but in the 83rd minute, the best chance of the match for the home side fell to McGovern. Swapping passes with Zaaboub, the Frenchman's cut back was met by McGovern who shot well over the bar from eight yards.

The two combined again from a corner, but the four minutes of added time were insufficient for Sturrock's men to grab a point.
