KIERAN Baggs insisted he would not allow himself a full celebration until news of Melksham Town's promotion to Southern League level for the first time in their history was rubber-stamped - despite his side standing on the brink of the achievement.

Town's 3-1 win at promotion rivals Willand Rovers on Wednesday night meant only an unlikely run of form from fifth-placed Buckland Athletic could deny them the runners up spot behind champions Street and the promotion prize.

A goal down inside a couple of minutes at Willand, Melksham turned the game on its head with two goals from assistant player-boss Luke Ballinger before fittingly, captain Gary Higdon struck an injury-time penalty - his 40th goal of the season - to wrap up the triumph.

For Melksham to be denied, Devon side Buckland need to win their final four games - the first of them on Thursday night against Cribbs - and overturn a goal difference of 30, but boss Baggs admitted he couldn't cut loose totally with the celebrations just yet.

"The champagne is on ice for now,'' said the Town chief.

"We celebrated a bit (after the Willand win) and had a little sing-song.

"Mathematically, it's practically impossible for Buckland to catch us but until it's done and dusted, we won't be celebrating properly.

"Hopefully we can start to think about Southern League football.

"It would be the first time in the club's history and I think it's something the club needed after the move to the new (Oakfields) stadium.''

Baggs, whose side had come from behind to beat Wellington 2-1 at home on Saturday with two Higdon strikes, added: "We had the worst possible start (against Willand).

"We were thinking they had to come out and have a go at us but I think it gave us the kick up the backside we needed.

"Everyone was positive and we had around 100 supporters follow us down there.

"These guys have been behind us all season away from home and they did it again and really supported the boys.''
