DEVIZES Town moved a step closer to securing a top-six finish in Toolstation League First Division with a thumping 4-1 win at home to Oldland Abbotonians at the weekend.

The match was Town’s last at Nursteed Road this season as Darran Walters’ side now conclude the campaign with trips to title chasers Westbury United on Wednesday and Welton Rovers on Saturday.

Devizes are currently fifth in the standings and should they retain that position over the final few rounds of fixtures, it would mark their best season since another fifth-placed finish back in 2010-11.

Manager Walters said: “We are absolutely delighted to finish the season at home like that.

“We have been great at home all season and only lost three times in the league there. It’s been a really solid foundation for us.

“To finish in the top six would be a great achievement. It would mean we’re involved in the FA Cup next season and that has always been a bit of an ambition for us.

“The squad has been pretty consistent all season and the players have done well. It’s all credit to them, really.

“A top-six finish would be as high as we have been for a good number of years, so it would be a real sign of improvement. Hopefully we can finish the job now.”

Devizes ran riot against Oldland and scored all of their goals in the first half through Jack Hopper, Ali Bradley, Matt Russell and Tom Slater.

Walters added: “The first-half performance was one of the best we have had this season.

“We were 4-0 up after half-an-hour, so the game was over by the time we came in at half-time and it was just a case of being sensible.

“Not much really happened in the second half but we knew the job was already done.

“We were disappointed to lose 3-2 at Radstock Town on the Thursday before as we felt we should have got something from that game, but the players bounced back really well. They have done that all season.”

Elsewhere, it finished honours even in the Wiltshire derby between Corsham Town and Malmesbury Victoria as they shared a 1-1 draw.

There was also a point for Chippenham Park as they damaged Keynsham Town’s promotion hopes by claiming a 3-3 draw in Bristol.

However, it was an afternoon to forget for Calne Town as they were thrashed 5-0 at home by Sherborne Town.

Like Devizes, Corsham also have a midweek fixture and host Portishead Town on Wednesday in their final match of the season.

Chippenham Park conclude their campaign on Saturday away at Chard Town, while Malmesbury host Bishops Lydeard.

Both they and Calne still have fixtures remaining after this weekend.
