AS Swindon approached their two season defining games over the past week they knew at least 4 points was needed to have a fighting chance of making the playoffs, but once again this Town side came up short.

Despite putting in two hardworking performances the problems highlighted throughout the season were on display, simply being the squad built by David Flitcroft last summer has never been good enough as a team.

We have plenty of impressive individual players at the club, but from the outside looking in there doesn’t seem to be much of a team dynamic, which has partly led to a awful run of results starting in early February.

Over the past 13 games Town have won just 3, have picked up 14 points from a possible 39, and still incredibly sit one point behind 7th place Coventry City – who have a game in hand.

That’s a sad indictment of how bad the standard has been in League Two this season, and more worrying how Swindon have now become entrenched with the forth tier of English football over the past 9 months.

To have any realistic chance of our season continuing into mid-May with the playoff semi-finals we need to take a minimum of 9 points from our remaining games against Newport (a), Grimsby (h), Colchester (a), and Accrington (h).

But if you look back at the past two months, the performances and results, nothing tells you that this squad will all of a sudden bounce back and win three games over the next month.

I hope I’m wrong and the 89th minute goal from Yeovil acts as a kick-starter to our season, but everyone reading this many need to start accepting life in League Two will continue next season.

Despite the poor result on Tuesday evening there was one huge positive from the game, the full home debut of youth team graduate Scott Twine who filled in at right midfield, and impressed all those around him.

Scott became the 6th player trialled by manager Phil Brown on the right hand side of midfield, and out of all the others he looked the best fit.

Hopefully we’ll see more of the 18-year-old as Town desperately tries to salvage something from this season with a win this weekend in South Wales.
