HEAVY rain forced four Wiltshire League games to be postponed over the Bank Holiday weekend as the unseasonal weather further disrupted the league’s progress.

Bassett Bulldogs, Corsham Town Reserves, Devizes Town Reserves and Malmesbury Victoria Development all had to postpone their home games against Marlborough, Wroughton, Cricklade and Shrewton respectively.

Only one tie survived the persistent rain as Royal Wootton Bassett Town’s development squad hosted Trowbridge Town in a mid-table clash on Saturday.

It means Bassett now have only two league fixtures to complete before ending their season, a complete contrast to Purton who must squeeze in 14 fixtures in less than two months.

Trowbridge, meanwhile, were taking to the field for the first time since February 24 after being hit by a series of postponements.

But their lack of game time certainly didn’t affect their form as Trowbridge hit the goal trail against Bassett to secure a comfortable 4-1 victory.

It proved the second time this season Bassett have conceded four times against Trowbridge as the visitors took a two-goal lead into the interval following strikes from Elliott Caldicott and Ben Ryder in the first 45 minutes.

While Rich Clarke pulled a goal back for the home side following the restart, Trowbridge soon re-established their two-goal lead when Kieron Taylor struck Town’s third.

Dan Sandford rounded off the scoring for Trowbridge with a fine individual goal to wrap up the three points.

Sandford ran from the halfway line, beating the entire Bassett defence before firing into the bottom corner to hit Town’s fourth.

The win guided Trowbridge further clear of the drop zone as they picked up their second win on the spin.

Town are now 10 points clear of bottom side Bassett Bulldogs, while Bassett’s development side remain sixth on 42 points.

More Wiltshire League action is scheduled to take place tonight, with five games looking likely to go ahead.

League leaders Melksham Town Reserves will be looking to add to their 11-point advantage at the top of the table as they host Marlborough Town.

Third-placed Kintbury Rangers are also in action at home to Pewsey Vale Development while Wroughton face Purton in a mid-table clash.

The other two scheduled games include Trowbridge Town hosting bottom side Bassett Bulldogs while Devizes Town Reserves travel to Shrewton United.
