RICH Hunter believes there are plenty of positives his Royal Wootton Bassett Town side can take following their 3-0 home defeat to Thatcham Town in Hellenic League Premier Division.

The Gerard Buxton Sports Ground boss, who celebrated a year in charge over the Bank Holiday weekend, feels his team managed to compete with their high-flying visitors for the best part of an hour.

However, a 10-minute lapse in concentration saw Thatcham score three quick goals, with Josh Helmore, Shane Cooper-Clarke and Joe Blunt putting the game to bed by the 70th minute.

“When we put things together, we look good,” Hunter said. “But we can’t afford to switch off like we did.

“There are positives for us to take, but there are things for us to work on as well.”

Bassett will get a chance to put things right tomorrow afternoon when they make the short trip to Highworth Town.

“That was my first game in charge last year – a 3-3 draw – it was a good game,” added Hunter, who has brought in former Shrivenham player-manager Sam Collier as well as ex-Highworth man Rory Sproule and England schoolboy international goalkeeper Dan Lawrence over the last couple of weeks.

“It is a massive game for us, it is a derby and all the boys will be switched on.”

In Division One West, Pewsey Vale's 100 per cent start to the campaign was ended as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Letcombe and Ball Road.

Harrison Lowe netted for the home side while Conor Lynch scored for Letcombe.

Melksham Town suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat in the Toolstation League Premier Division as Shepton Mallet clinched the spoils at Oakfields.

New signing Tyler Sibbick put Melksham ahead on the 80-minute mark, but Mallet equalised five minutes later and then nicked the winner two minutes later.

There were six of the best from Westbury United as they maintained their unbeaten start to the Toolstation League First Division campaign with a 6-0 thumping of Portishead Town in Somerset.

Mark Robinson gave Westbury the lead from the penalty spot and Jamie Jordan powered home a header before an own goal made it 3-0.

Robinson netted a second before the interval and Josh Ferguson scored the fifth in the second period. Martin Johnson scored the sixth for the visitors.

Ryan Crouch scored the only goal for Ashton & Backwell United as Warminster Town slipped to their second defeat of the season.

Corsham Town were also on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline as Sherborne Town clinched the three points at Southbank.

Rob Mitchell netted a penalty for Devizes Town but they were beaten 2-1 by Oldland Abbotonians.

In the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup, Bradford Town got the better of their Wiltshire derby at Calne Town with a 4-2 success.

Sam Jordan netted a hat-trick for the visitors, with Anthony Conradi also on target while Alex Lewis and Mark Dolman found the net for the home side.

Lewis McCarron and Paul Gittins were on target as Chippenham Park defeated Longwell Green Sports 2-1 in their tie, while Malmesbury Victoria were beaten 4-2 at home by Bishops Lydeard.
