SWINDON Town’s encouraging start to life in League Two continued last weekend as Donal McDermott’s wonder strike earned David Flitcroft’s side another away maximum on the road at Morecambe.

McDermott didn’t enjoy a great debut against Exeter City a week earlier and was substituted at half-time, but he has endeared himself to the Town faithful thanks to his energetic performance at the Globe Arena.

Another player who never seems to stop working for the cause is Paul Mullin.

After watching so many lacklustre performances week after week last season, it’s easy to forget players like Mullin still existed.

He again ran himself into the ground and looked a constant threat against his former side.

It’s easy to see him becoming a real fan favourite as the season progresses.

The most encouraging aspect of the afternoon were the performances of our centre-backs, Olly Lancashire and Dion Conroy.

In the previous game against West Ham U21s, they looked disjointed as a centre-back partnership.

But despite not facing the same level of pace as against the Hammers, they easily snuffed out danger all afternoon.

On Tuesday, Flitcroft made his 12th summer signing for Town as former Portsmouth and West Ham midfielder Matt Taylor signed a one-year contract at the County Ground.

Taylor is best known for his successful six-year spell at Pompey, where he helped the club win promotion to the Premier League and eventually became a key player in Harry Redknapp’s side, either playing as a left-back or left midfield.

The 35-year-old’s experience will become invaluable over the season when Town need to kill off a game, with all the usual tactics needed to frustrate the opposition to push Town over the line in pressurised games.

This signing also knocks the last nail into the coffin and firmly buries the club’s former self under chairman Lee Power.

There is no way this type of signing would’ve been brought in over the past couple of years.

This certainly is David Flitcroft’s Swindon Town.
