DARREN Perrin is rallying his Melksham Town troops for one final push this season.

Town will guarantee themselves a third-placed finish in the Toolstation Premier Division if they beat Wells City at home in their last league game on Saturday – a position which could bring with it promotion should there be restructuring of the leagues above over the summer.

Perrin’s side are currently level on points with fourth-placed Buckland Athletic but boast a far superior goal difference, so know any victory this weekend is likely to be enough.

Melksham are also chasing qualification to the Les Phillips Cup final and travel to Premier Division rivals Gillingham Town in the last four on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Gills won 1-0 at Melksham’s Oakfields ground over Easter so Perrin’s side are not short of motivation and although the Town boss is hungry to add to his side’s recent trophy haul, he says they cannot afford to look past Wells at this stage.

“We would love to finish third, it would represent a tremendous season for the club,” said Perrin, who led his side to the Premier Division title two years ago as well as Wiltshire Senior Cup triumphs in 2014 and 2016.

“We will try to win on Saturday and if we do, then anything else that might come with it is in the hands of other people.

“That’s the first challenge, to win on Saturday, and then after that, we will regroup and try to reach the Les Phillips Cup final for the first time in the club’s history.

“In each of the last three seasons, we have managed to win silverware and we are still in with a chance of doing that four years in a row, and we are all desperate to try to do that.

“They are both tough games coming up. We drew 3-3 at Wells earlier in the season and everyone knows how unhappy I was with the performance when Gillingham came here on Easter Monday.

“There is a bit of extra incentive there for us and they might think they have got the measure of us after that.

“But for now, we just want to get Saturday out of the way, try to win that game and then move onto the semi-final.”
