TWO down at half-time in the final of the Wiltshire Junior Cup, Trowbridge League side Luxol St Andrews looked to be dead and buried against Swindon League outfit Tawny Owl.

However, they turned the game on its head as they fought back to claim a 3-2 success.

Tawny Owl bossed the first half and really should have been further ahead after Kenny Hawkins rose unmarked to head home a Lewis Page corner on 17 minutes and Dave Slattery was on hand to tap home in the 35th minute following an error in the Luxol defence.

Luxol did have a few half-chances, however it was Tawny Owl who once they got into their stride looked all odds-on for cup glory.

The second period failed to see Owl kick on, it was Luxol who were the dominant force as they started off at a blistering pace and really should have done better on 46 minutes when Dan Cockerill chose the wrong option and shot tamely into the hands of keeper Darren Coleman.

A few minutes later Josh Hard and Elliot Carris-Smith combined with the latter failing to test keeper Coleman from close range.

Luxol were now in the ascendancy and were unlucky no to reduce the arrears when Mark Reynolds hit the post, Carris-Smith was denied by the legs of keeper Coleman and Jordan Gullis thumped an effort over the bar.

The game’s turning point came on the 63rd minute when Luxol were awarded a contentious penalty, which led to Owl’s Lewis Page being sent off.

Josh Hard kept his nerve to fire home from the spot.

The next goal was always going to be important and a glorious chance fell to Tawny Owl’s Ryan Fry who headed wide of the gaping Luxol goal.

On 73 minutes, Mark Reynolds saw another chance go begging, but seconds later Luxol received another slice of luck, the ball having been played into the area was sliced by James Townsend back over keeper Coleman’s head and into the empty net to make it two apiece.

Luxol completed their remarkable comeback in the 83rd minute, Mark Reynolds planted the ball home from 16 yards after Kieran Hard had blasted wide moments earlier.

Luxol had chances to add a fourth and Tawny Owl had a couple of half chances to snatch a late equaliser, but Luxol held on to inflict a first defeat of the campaign on the Swindon men.
