PUT your hand up if you expected that result on Saturday? No, me neither.

Last weekend, Swindon Town upset the odds against the in-form side in the entire Football League as they ended Millwall’s 16-game unbeaten run in League One thanks to a last-gasp winner from Conor Thomas, sending the County Ground into raptures and lifting Luke Williams’ side four points away from safety.

Since arriving in Wiltshire last summer, the former Coventry City midfielder hasn’t enjoyed a hugely successful first season, but that may be because he’s been asked to play all over the pitch.

But fans are now wondering if this last-minute win is another false dawn or a real chance of survival this season?

Last week, I predicted Town would need at least four wins from their remaining seven games to have any chance of staying up and hope other sides do them a favour in beating Port Vale, Shrewsbury, Gillingham and Oldham along the way.

In all fairness to Williams’ side, they have made a good start to their very own great escape.

Granted, this squad of players, especially since January, shouldn’t be in the mess they find themselves in, but beating Millwall is the perfect way to kick-off a run of seven cup finals.

Next up are high-flying Fleetwood Town, who find themselves third in League One after hugely overachieving under manager Uwe Rosler.

After only picking up one win in their last four games, Rosler’s side have now lost their grip on second place, but are still nine points inside the play-off places, so hopefully come Saturday, the Cod Army will be complacent, knowing a place in the top six is all but secure, and Swindon can take advantage.

There is no doubt facing Fleetwood will be another huge test but after gaining renewed confidence last weekend, let’s hope Town can add another page to their great escape story at Highbury.
