TOOLSTATION League First Division strugglers Corsham Town came close to earning a much-needed point at the weekend but were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home by Ashton & Blackwell United.

Nigel Tripp’s side were able to hold firm for the first half as it ended with neither side making the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes.

However, the visitors did break the deadlock on the hour mark when Sam Skidmore looped a header into the top corner for the winner.

Despite losing the match, manager Tripp believes his side are going about things in the right way.

“Obviously it is the results that matter, but the performance wasn’t too bad and again, we have created more chances,” said Tripp “We just don’t take them, that is the difference. People just see the results and the league position but we are doing okay.

“To me, it makes no difference if we finish fourth from top or fourth from bottom because we are building the club from the bottom.

“We are missing a natural striker. We have more opportunities than other teams but our average age is about 20 years old, nine of them have never played at this level.

“We are doing it right. Obviously there is a lot of negativity at the club by people who aren’t important, people just see results, and they don’t see the bigger picture.”

Elsewhere, Malmesbury Victoria shipped five goals for the second time in as many weeks as they slipped up on the road at Wincanton Town this weekend.

Kevin Bridgeman’s side had been beaten 5-1 at county rivals Warminster Town in their last outing on January 14 and suffered further misery when they made the trip to Wincanton Town.

Wincanton condemned the Vics to a 5-0 defeat, with Connor Williams notching a hat-trick.

Bridgeman’s men currently find themselves eighth in the table.

Devizes Town were unable to find a way past the stubborn defence of leaders Wellington as they played out a 0-0 draw in Somerset.

Things have improved for Chippenham Park over the last few weeks and they followed up an impressive victory over Wellington last week with another point on Saturday Their unbeaten run has now been stretched to five games after they picked up a 1-1 draw with Chard Town – Darrin Moss got the goal.

Calne Town also drew 1-1 at home to Cheddar after Mark Dolman’s goal was cancelled out by a defensive mix-up.

In Sydenhams League Division One, Pewsey Vale were smashed 9-0 at home by AFC Stoneham, while Royal Wootton Bassett Town hosted Woodley United in the Hellenic League Supplementary Cup and Steve Robertson scored twice in a 2-1 extra-time to set up victory.
