ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town beat Ascot United at a canter on Saturday as they completed a 3-1 victory away from home in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

However, the visitors were slow out of the traps as Ascot full-back Jack Smilie fired in a stunning long-range drive to give the hosts the lead.

Bassett were able to go into the break on level terms as Curtis Meare set up Dale Richards to restore parity in the final minutes of the first half.

Bassett then went ahead three minutes after the break as Sam Packer headed in Dan Comer’s teasing free-kick before Robertson punished Ascot for slack play at the back, calmly stroking home after being set free by Thompson.

Both sides ended the game a man light as Packer reacted to a challenge from Colin Moyoga, with both being given their marching orders.

Meanwhile, in Sydenhams League Division One, Pewsey Vale remain a place off the foot of the table following their 5-2 defeat to Downton last Saturday.

David Cope and Cameron Mackenzie were both on the scoresheet for the hosts but strikes from Samuel Howe, Shaun Prentice and Benjamin Smith, as well as a brace from substitute Declan McGregor, inflicted a 19th defeat of the campaign on the Wiltshire outfit.
