WE HAVE a new name to add to the list of non-league clubs that have successfully dumped Swindon Town out of the FA Cup.

Hastings United, Kettering Town, Tooting & Mitcham United, Dagenham, Stevenage Borough, Histon, Crawley, Macclesfield Town and now Eastleigh join the list after another embarrassing showing from Town.

Following on from Town’s superb result against Charlton, I was confident the corner had been turned and Swindon would see off Eastleigh.

But this team managed to do what they do best this season - disappoint us.

The result certainly did one thing, if new “director of football” Tim Sherwood didn’t know what a tough job he’s taken on; he will have some idea now.

This season, I’ve been critical of the chairman Lee Power, for many different reasons, but its only fair when the owner takes the club in a positive direction it’s acknowledged, and the hiring of Sherwood is a great move.

It’s on a non-contract basis so its pretty clear the former Premier League manager won’t be planning a 10-year project, but having him around the club is a huge boost.

In his unveiling last Thursday, it was revealed he’d be picking the team, choosing the style of football, taking training, and in control of transfers.

Sherwood is the new Swindon Town manager in all but name, but it seems because we have a head coach in Luke Williams, and the club didn’t want to demote him, Sherwood has been given the title director of football, which is a bit confusing, as that role is normally someone who just deals with transfers.

But he could be called director of football, chief footballing officer, head of football matters, or king of football at Swindon Town, it doesn’t matter, we just need him to guide this side away from trouble.

At the moment, it’s tough to judge Sherwood’s Town with this set of players as it’s not his side.

As I’ve mentioned previously, and as the chairman mentioned, we have to bring in experienced faces, hopefully Power is a man who can provide Sherwood with a decent budget in January and rebuild the side.
