CORSHAM Town showed a strength of character to come from 4-0 down to secure a point from their opening game of the season on Tuesday night.

Nigel Tripp’s new look side got their campaign underway at Hardenhuish when facing Chippenham Park.

The hosts raced into a 4-0 lead at the break thanks to goals from Danny Sibley, Jordan Coulter, Mark Robinson and Lewis McCarron.

But Ben Pring started the fightback midway through the second half after Tripp used all three of his subsitutes.

Corsham went on to grab a last minute equaliser - much to the delight of Tripp.

“Ben Pring scored a hat-trick, although he is trying to claim all four, I’m not sure if one of them has been given as an own goal,” the Corsham manager said.

“We did well in the second half, we spoke at half-time about what we had done wrong and they went out and put it right.

“We are new side so it pleasing to see the character from the boys.”

Devizes Town hit the top of the early standings on Tuesday night after their 3-1 success over Warminster Town.

Darran Walters men went in at the break with their winning score thanks to goals from Luke Enderby, Jordon Matthews and Tom Slater.

On Saturday, Devizes and Chippenham Park had shared the spoils on the opening day of the season after drawing 3-3.

Town’s goals came from Robbie Whyte, Tom Slater and Jordan Matthews, while Jamie Norman, Jordan Coulter and Ryan Tyrell replied.

Calne Town were 2-0 winners at Warminster Town, Josh Legg getting a debut goal and Mark Dolman scoring the other from the spot.

Also on Saturday, Malmesbury Victoria were unable to get their new life in the Toolstation League off to a positive start as they were beaten at Roman Glass St George.

Kev Bridgeman’s side, who are back in step 10 football after gaining promotion from the Wiltshire League last term, made the trip to Bristol for their season opener but were beaten 3-1.

The Vics trailed to goals from Jason Burt and Rhys O’Donovan before Krystian Hext pulled one back, but Adam Snook wrapped up the points for Glass.

Pewsey Vale bounced back from an opening 5-0 defeat to Laverstock & Ford in Sydenhams League Division One with an impressive 4-2 win over Alton Town on Saturday, although the victory was marred by an injury to Kristian Greer, who required an ambulance after twisting his knee, forcing a 40-minute delay to the match.

It was 2-2 at half-time, David Flanagan and Micky Martin on target for Vale, and the pair doubled their tallies after the break to secure the win.

Paul Braithwaite’s Royal Wootton Bassett Town were also in action at the weekend but they fell to a disappointing 5-2 defeat away at Andover Town in the FA Cup.
