PAUL Braithwaite’s Royal Wootton Bassett Town side crashed out of the FA Cup after a comprehensive 5-2 defeat away at Andover Town.

The deadlock was broken with just 25 minutes on the clock when Adam George put the home side in front.

Andover then tripled their advantage ten minutes later – this time it was Craig Blakeman who found the net in the 35th minute before Craig Stanley’s 38th-minute strike put them 3-0 up at half-time.

The second half was more of the same and Bassett conceded again early in the second half, Chris Onouifriou applying the finish to make it 4-0 to the hosts.

Just over an hour of the game had been played and Bassett burst into life, Alioune Diouf scoring twice, in the 63rd and 79th minutes, to make it 4-2.

But any hopes of a revival were soon squashed when Bassett’s goalkeeper brought down Andover Town’s Shane Lock, subsequently handing the hosts a penalty and a chance to put the game to bed.

Liam Gilbert converted the spot-kick in the 85th minute, a goal which signified the end of the game and Bassett’s FA Cup campaign.

Braithwaite’s men are back in action next Saturday afternoon when they return to league action away at Henley Town.

However, there was better news for Highworth Town.

Fabian McCarthy and Tom Cole scored as Highworth Town progressed with a 2-1 win over Tadley Calleva this afternoon.
