CALNE Town assistant manager Robert Jones believes youth is the key for the Lilywhites who have promoted a number of youngsters to their squad.

This comes after the Lilywhites were unable to bring in many experienced players, other than central defender Danny Jones who makes a return to the club.

Pre-season has also been turbulent for Calne who have only managed to play three friendly fixtures.

“It’s been a bit hit and miss to be honest with you, we have only played three friendlies unfortunately so it’s not gone as well as we would have liked.” said Jones The club's new policy, which aims to get more youngsters into the club with the target of first team football has been hailed as an important step by number two Jones.

“It’s massive for us, we brought one up for the second half of the season last year and it worked well,'' he added.

“It’s important because we haven’t had an influx of quality and experienced players at this level, we can’t get them in for a number of reasons.”

Overall Calne are looking to continue as they were last season, where they finished in 15th place in the Toolstation League First Division.

“I think if we finish above where we did last year which was about midway that would be a good season, but it is hard to tell until you know what everyone has got,'' said Jones.

“ If the teams are as strong as they were last year I think we could say top eight, but if they’re not as strong as last season then I’d be tempted to say top six, in a nutshell to match last year.”

Calne Town start their assault on the Toolstation League First Division away at Warminster this Saturday (3pm).
