CHIPPENHAM schoolboy Tom Norcott was crowned Iber Cup champion after travelling to Lisbon with Reading FC.

The 11-year-old played in the highly-regarded international tournament, which featured 48 teams from all over the world.

The Redland Primary School pupil has been playing for Reading for four seasons since switching from Chippenham Town.

Mum Caroline, who travelled with him, said: “I knew that he would go to Portugal but I didn’t know how good the team was. It wasn’t until half term when I saw his team play and they won the National Cup so that was when I thought they could do well. It was fantastic, once in a lifetime.”

After playing the likes of Lyon and Sevilla, Reading faced Japanese outfit Yokohama in the final, which they won 3-0.

Goalkeeper Norcott played in all seven fixtures, conceding just two goals.

His mum added: “I’m really proud of him and the team. They’re mixed over two age groups and have gelled really well because they’ve only played together twice in the past year.

“They have achieved the impossible as they are the first team in the foundation age to win anything.”
