PEWSEY Vale finished a disappointing campaign on a positive note with victory over First Division champions Portland United.

Liam Weir got the only goal of the game for Pewsey midway through the second half at Ball Road, with the win just a sixth in the league for Adi Holcombe’s men.

Pewsey were already destined to finish second from bottom in the table but the three points at least sees them finish six clear of basement boys East Cowes Victoria.

The first half ended all square as both Michael Martin and Jack Hopper went close for Vale, while Alex Godfrey threatened for Portland at the other end.

Pewsey eventually got their noses in front after a low corner kick found Martin, who flicked the ball on to Weir to slot home.

Vale went close again soon afterwards as Martin saw a shot blocked a point-blank range by Pewsey keeper Sam Williamson.
