CALNE Town finished the season with a crushing defeat at the hands of Chipping Sodbury Town, who were crowned First Division champions in the process.

Needing a big win – and a slip-up for title rivals Wells City – Sodbury went on the attack early at Bremhill View and had the lead inside 10 minutes though a Justin Bishop strike from 20 yards.

Neurin Jones’ Calne were able to hold their visitors at bay for the remainder of the first half but Sodbury doubled their tally swiftly after the restart as Sam Jenkins hit the back of the net.

Calne continued to push but fell further behind just after the hour mark when an innocuous 25-yard free-kick from Justin Hales was sent into the box and was missed by everyone before flying past goalkeeper Nathan Phillimore and settling in the back of the net.

Dave Sims then scored twice in quick succession to pull Sodbury further clear before Hales also got his second of the game to round off the scoring.

The result caps a disappointing end to the season for the Lilywhites, who had looked on course for a top-half finish earlier in the year but took one point from their last five matches, which were all at home.
