DARREN Perrin will not be swayed by sentiment this weekend as he bids to lead Melksham Town to a twin trophy triumph.

Melksham were crowned Wiltshire Senior Cup champions for the third time in four years on Wednesday night when they claimed a 2-0 success over Salisbury at Hardenhuish Park in Chippenham.

They will look to book a place in another cup semi on Bank Holiday Monday when they travel to Cribbs in the Les Phillips Cup quarter-finals.

However, before that is the small matter of the last-ever league match at Melksham’s Conigre home before they move to a new ground next season – and potentially the last ever game should they be knocked out of the cup or progress to an away semi-final.

Although Perrin would dearly love to sign off with a win over Barnstaple Town on Saturday, the fact they cannot finish in the top three of the Toolstation Premier Division – and will therefore miss out on promotion – means Monday’s cup quest has to take priority.

“I have said to the players to enjoy Wednesday night but then we go again,” said Perrin.

“On Saturday, I will certainly look to rotate the squad and use some fringe players, although I have got to try to be fair to the lads as we are expecting a crowd of around 700 or 800 and a lot of them want to play at the Conigre.

“The Conigre holds a lot of memories for me, through my dad (Mick) and my family, and it does for the players too.

“It’s a massive game at Cribbs on Monday because we believe we could go all the way in the Les Phillips Cup. We have had three of four unbelievably successful seasons and we want to continue that.”

Melksham’s Wiltshire Cup success over a Salisbury side managed by Steve Claridge follows their triumphs in the same competition in 2013 and 2014 and Perrin reckons this was the best one yet considering the stature of their opponents.

“I think this one is the sweetest,” added Perrin.

“They are a quality outfit. They have got to the semi-finals of the FA Vase, they have won their league by 20-odd points, they have got a big budget, they have got proven players and a high-profile manager.

“I think all the hallmarks were there for a Salisbury victory but the lads did fantastic and I couldn’t be more pleased.”
