EVEN IF other teams may appear to be easing up late in the season, Devizes Town manager Darren Walters doesn’t see any reason why his side should take their own foot off the gas.

Devizes’ recent resurgence continued this week as they followed up a 4-2 victory over local rivals Calne Town on Saturday with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Wellington on Tuesday night – the Nursteed Road men have now won four of their last five in the Toolstation League First Division.

It may be too late to spark a significant rise up the table for Devizes but boss Walters is enjoying seeing his players savouring their current run of fine form and hopes that the smiles remain on their faces through to the conclusion of their campaign.

“We’ve got the same personnel that we’ve pretty much had all season but for whatever reason, we’re playing really well at the moment,” said the Nursteed Road chief.

“Possibly other teams are taking their foot of the gas a little bit but that’s always going to happen because a 40-game season is a long one – we’re just trying to keep going and pick up as many points as we can before the end of the season.

“We beat Keynsham last week, which was a very good result, and in our two games this week, we’ve thoroughly deserved it.

“We’re also getting decisions in our favour and a bit of luck, which you don’t get when you’re struggling down the bottom or you’re not playing well.

“Against Wellington, they’ve had a shot that’s hit the bar and then hit our keeper before bouncing away, and it was 1-1 against Calne when they missed a chance to go 2-1 up – we’ve then gone and scored ourselves.”

During the first half on Tuesday, a Wellington defender was penalised for handball in the box, allowing Dan Sloan to open the scoring from the spot, and shortly afterwards Ali Bradley made it 2-0.

Devizes were unable to add to their lead, right up until a mix-up at the back saw a visiting defender slide a back-pass into his own net.

On Saturday, Bradley’s deflected effort put Walters’ men ahead against Calne before Rory Worthington levelled matters before the break.

Neurin Jones’ Lilywhites lost stand-in keeper Stuart Windsor to injury, with defender Rob Pocock forced to don the gloves, and Bradley, Robbie Mitchell and Tom Slater all netted to put Devizes in control.

Regular Calne keeper Steve Allison, who was unable to play in goal due to a hand injury, did come off the bench and marked a spell out on pitch with a late consolation effort three minutes from time.

Jones' men did bounce back to winning ways on Tuesday with a fine 1-0 victory at Hengrove Athletic.

Pocock played in goal again from the start but went on to keep a clean sheet, with the visitors standing up to a torrent of pressure in the second period.

Jake Brand headed into the Hengrove goalie's arms in the 75th minute but with 10 to go, he successfully nodded home the winner from a Mark Dolman cross.
