JEFF Roberts was delighted to sign off with a comprehensive derby victory in his final home game in charge of Corsham Town last weekend.

Corsham secured a third victory of the season over James Goddard’s Westbury United with a thumping 4-0 win at the Southbank, with Sam Ockwell netting twice, whilst Aysa Corrick and Keiron Gleed were also on target for the hosts.

Roberts, who is set to depart Corsham at the end of the current campaign to take over at Hellenic League side Highworth Town, has led his team to three victories in their last four outings and hopes that proves that he hasn’t simply been going through the motions since tendering his resignation at the Southbank last month.

“When I handed in that resignation, I think some people might have thought that we’d just coast through but I always said that I wanted to try and take the club as far as I could,” said Roberts.

“Whenever you come in anywhere, you have a plan in your mind of what you’d like to do and that might take two or three seasons, so it’s unfortunate that Highworth came in after a year and that was too tempting.

“With the team that we’ve got and when you look at how wide open the league is, I think that we could have won it, but you have to look back at the points that we dropped over the year.

“We had to change a lot of things at the football club and we had a bit of disruption over the year, where we had to bring players in – without that, maybe we’d have done better.”

Roberts added: “We’d beaten Westbury in the league and the Vase already this season but their results had picked up, so we said to the lads that they couldn’t take them lightly.

“With all of the rain that we had on Saturday, the conditions suited us because we could move the ball around quicker.

"In the second half, it was all one-way traffic – we could have scored eight, nine or 10.

"We've made use of the wingers a lot more in the last couple of games and we'll try and keep doing that in our last game."

Corsham’s final match of the season sees them go to Wellington on April 23, whilst Westbury go to the Somerset side next weekend.
