Division Two champions-elect Westbury Town will have to wait a little while longer before they pop open the champagne.

Westbury were expected to clinch the title with victory at Trowbridge Town Reserves.

However a torrential downpour prior to kick-off put paid to any planned celebrations as it left the Town’s Woodmarsh pitch underwater.

With Westbury almost certain to finish in pole position, the battle for the second automatic spot is starting to hot up and on Saturday afternoon two of those side in the hunt went head-to-head at the Beeches.

Melksham Town A boosted their own hopes of finishing as runners with a 9-2 win over Luxol St Andrews Reserves whose own hopes of collecting some silverware have been dented after the defeat.

Rhys Talmash top scored with a hat-trick, Sean Fordham scored twice and a goal each for Callum Demkiv, Tom Mack, Lewis Hughes (penalty) and Alex Hillier made up the nine.

Joe Newman and Terry Askew replied.

Calne Eagles kept up their pursuit of promotion with a well-earned 4-0 win over The Stiffs.

In recent weeks Calne Eagles’ small but committed squad of players have been grinding out results, relying more on defensive steel more than free flowing football. However, in this match they dominated throughout and were good value for their 4-0 win.

Eagles’ opened the scoring just before half time when Ned Edney scored from the spot after striker Mickey Taraskevics was fouled inside the area.

They then doubled their lead early in the second half when Karl Sharratt’s shot from just outside the box squirmed through goalkeeper Andy Curtis, who was unable to stop the ball creeping over the line.

The game was delayed after 55 minutes for a short period due to a torrential hailstorm that set in, which left the pitch sodden.

But this did nothing to alter the flow of the game and with 20 minutes remaining Calne’s Karl Sharratt scored a superb individual goal to make the score 3-0.

The Stiffs were denied a consolation when goalkeeper Andy Windsor tipped top scorer Steve Lewin’s shot over the bar.

Lewin was also denied moments later when he looked like he was going to tap-in into an empty net from six yards out after Windsor had saved well from Lee Ridout’s shot, which fell straight into Lewin’s path.

But a superb last-ditch tackle from defender Matt Bowery kept his side’s clean sheet intact.

With 10 minutes left Calne’s veteran striker Brett Cullen headed home Jake Mizen’s corner to complete the 4-0 score line.
