WROUGHTON showed no signs of ring rust as they eased to a 2-0 win away at Marlborough Town in their first match for six weeks.

Mark Love's men have not played since going down by the same scoreline at home to Trowbridge Wanderers on December 12 but reignited their quest to a top-four finish with victory at Elcot Lane.

Chris Balfe gave Wroughton a first-half lead against the run of play but the visitors upped their game after the break and James Turner doubled the advantage to make the points safe and push his side up to sixth in the table.

Wroughton assistant boss Paul Bowden said: “I think it was probably about deserved.

"In the first half, they probably had the better of the play but we managed to get a goal and go in 1-0 in front at the break.

“We were on top at the start of the second half but we missed three really good chances. You’re obviously worried that might come back to bite you but luckily we were able to get a second goal to finish it off.

“We just want to keep plugging away and if we keep playing like we did on Saturday, then I think we should be able to get into the top four.

"We’re still in a few cups as well so there might even be a chance of some silverware for us.

“We’ve had a few call-offs recently, so it was just nice to get a game in. We don’t really train either so I think the lads were just happy to get a bit of a workout again.

“We’ve got Trowbridge Town next Saturday and they are top of the league. We know that will be a tough game and we wouldn’t really want to go into that one without a game in seven weeks.”

Elsewhere, Melksham Town Reserves netted a magnificent seven to beat bottom side Sarum Youth, who failed to register a reply, to climb up to third in the table.

There were also a pair of five-star displays from Shrewton United and Ludgershall Sports on the road. Second-placed Shrewton won 5-1 at Devizes Town Reserves, with Sports fairing slightly better as they beat Vale of Pewsey 5-0.

Five was also the magic number as Wilts Calne Town and visitors Trowbridge Wanderers split that many goals between them, with the away side narrowly coming out on top.
