CALNE Town manager Neurin Jones saluted a rock-solid defensive display from his team as they claimed the scalp of Toolstation League First Division title-chasers Cheddar last weekend.

Jones’ side had suffered a midweek reverse at Roman Glass St George in midweek but produced the perfect response as they ensured a stinking day at the office for their third-in-the-table visitors, who missed out on the chance to go top of the pile.

Second-half goals from recent signing Dan Lardner and Tom Boakes ensured that Calne ran out 2-1 winners at Bremhill View and player-boss Jones is hoping that a standout victory for the Lilywhites will put the wind in their sails going forward.

“Cheddar are a very good team and they put us under a lot of pressure in the first half,” said the Calne chief.

“Our pitch was really heavy, which I imagine it was like for everybody in our league last weekend, and it was a really difficult game.

“They hit the post in that first half but I thought that we defended superbly. Our goalkeeper (Steve Allison) never really had a save to make.

“It was 0-0 at half-time and then Stu Windsor, who was playing up front on his own, has held the ball up really well and set up Dan Lardner to score a goal on his first start since signing back at Calne.

“Tom Boakes has got our second and then missed a chance to get another one when he was one-on-one with the keeper, but the keeper has saved it.

“Our goalie has been penalised for apparently stamping on one of their players in the box and they’ve scored a penalty with about 15 minutes to go, which made it a bit tense at the end, but we got through that and got the win."

Calne, who go to struggling Bishop Sutton next weekend, did suffer a major injury blow however as defender Marcus Lovesey suffered a broken shoulder in a fall, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
